SCORES AGAINST MAN CITY
United kicked off the 2002/03
Barclaycard Premiership in style as they thrashed new-boys
Manchester City 3-0, with Nick Barmby scoring on his debut
and further goals from Mark Viduka and Robbie Keane. Terry
Venables influence on this United team could be seen throughout,
with every player playing for each other and the defence
was particularly relaxed with Dominic Matteo and Lucas
Radebe at the heart. Leeds last beat City at home eight
years ago, but they have not lost an opening fixture for
seventeen years now, winning eight, now including the
last three Premiership openers. This is also the fourth
time in a row that Leeds have kicked off a new season
at home. United gave Nicky Barmby his Elland Road debut
and the former Liverpool man did not disappoint, he helped
pull the strings and his goal only told half the story
of his contribution. It was an indifferent first 15 minutes
from Leeds, they allowed Manchester City too much time
on the ball and wing-back Shaun Wright-Phillips was able
to maraude up and down the right flank, causing more a
few defensive headaches. Alan Smith's hanging cross showed
United that the visitors appeared a little nervous on
their Premiership return after it was dropped unexpectedly
by Carlo Nash, but fortunately for City Wright Phillips
was there to hack the ball away to safety. Leeds took
the lead on 15 minutes when Nick Barmby connected with
Lee Bowyer's low cross on the volley to give the Whites
the start they needed to their 2002/03 Premiership. The
cross may have been deflected, but there was no doubting
the quality of Barmby's finish. Alan Smith should have
doubled the score on 32 minutes, but he shot wide after
bringing down Ian Harte's corner in the box. With Sven
Goran Eriksson watching, Smith was a yard away from impressing
the England coach from 8 yards out. City were given their
best chance of the game when Lee Bowyer's back pass rebounded
off the chest of Paul Robinson, Nicolas Anelka looked
certain to open his account for the vistors but somehow
Matteo recovered in time and got a foot to the ball, with
Anelka going down and claiming a penalty. United got their
second right on the stroke of half-time when Mark Viduka,
who had been quiet in the half, got his first chance after
breaking from a pass from Nick Barmby and slotting the
ball past Carlo Nash in the City goal from a narrow angle.
United made no changes at half-time, and who could blame
them with the side in such exhilarating attacking form.
Lucas Radebe walked away with the official sponsors' man
of the match, and it was on balance well deserved as he
had the job of keeping Nicolas Anelka quiet. It was his
interception that stopped Anelka from firing home after
Benarbia had created the chance. Harry Kewell came close
to increasing the United's lead, beating Richard Dunne
on the line he rolled a shot across the face of the goal.
City were then forced into their third substitute when
Eyal Berkovic came off with extreme cramp allowing Chris
Shuker to come on for his Premiership debut. Within minutes
the young midfielder put Darren Huckerby through in the
penalty area but the striker blasted over the target.
Robbie Keane came on for Mark Viduka on 70 minutes and
showed himself to be hungry to impress Venables. There
had been rumours before the game that Keane would be given
his chance from the start, but he was just edged out by
Alan Smith. 11 minutes after coming on he ran on to a
header from Smith and his pace took him well clear of
the trailing City defence. With just Nash to beat he lobbed
the ball over the advancing keeper and into the back of
the net. Five minutes from time Robbie Keane was denied
a second when his shot rebounded off the upright after
Harry Kewell's run through the inside left channel. This
was a promising start from Leeds, still plenty to work
on as Terry Venables later admitted, but without doubt
there is now an exciting edge to United's play that was
lacking at times last season.
SPURS
NOT INTERESTED IN ROBBIE
Spurs boss Glenn Hoddle has
dismissed reports linking the club with a move for Robbie.
White Hart Lane director of football David Pleat had declared
earlier this week: "We are keeping abreast of the
Robbie Keane situation". That lead to further speculation
that Darren Anderton could go the other way in a swap
deal. However Hoddle said "If someone wants to give
you a bum steer , then so be it. If people want to know
they should ask me. I have a list of players i want -
and Keane is not on it".
Earlier this month Leeds agreed a £9 million fee
with Sunderland but robbie insisted: "I don't want
to talk to any other club, I'm happy at Leeds and believe
i can impress the new manager".
ROBBIE
SCORES AGAINST SUNDERLAND
Leeds kept their faint Champions
League hopes alive with a dogged win over a determined
Sunderland. An own goal from the visitors Jody Craddock
set the home side on their way, but a first victory in
three was by no means safe until substitute Robbie Keane
slotted home the second seven minutes from the end. Sunderland's
hopes of winning at Elland Road for the first time in
41 years were hit when Kevin Phillips went off at the
break, but they should have made it 1-1 only for Patrick
Mboma to blaze over three minutes before Keane's clincher.
Ian Harte also produced a telling goalline clearance as
the Black Cats refused to lay down despite a Lee Bowyer-inspired
Leeds dominating the opening hour of a game they simply
had to win. The last thing Sunderland will have wanted
to do is give their North East rivals at St James' a helping
hand, but as Leeds came roaring out of the traps that's
exactly what they did in the shape of a disastrous own
goal. Phillips lost possession in the home half and could
only watch as David O'Leary's side broke with their old
zest, freeing Alan Smith down the right and although his
driven cross did not find intended target Mark Viduka,
Craddock's shin sent it spinning agonisingly over his
keeper and into the top corner of the net. Phillips flashed
a characteristic volley wide before injuring his groin
and with him gone, their chances of cancelling out Craddock's
gaffe appeared slim. Mboma was asked to pick up the pieces
from Nial Quinn's aerial dominance while Kevin Kilbane
finally started to give Danny Mills another torrid time
after his mare against Manchester United. The Republic
of Ireland winger thought his deflected cross had looped
over Nigel Martyn for the leveller on 70 minutes, only
for international team-mate Harte to get back and scoop
a header out from right under the crossbar. A break from
his own half was ended by a timely Joachim Bjorklund tackle,
but as Smith won the ball back and squared to Viduka,
he picked out the Keane on the penalty spot and he prodded
coolly past Sorensen.
ROBBIE
" I LOVE LEEDS "
Robbie Keane has vowed to fight
for his place at Leeds United ad ignore the rising level
of speculation which sees a move away from Elland Road
as inevitable. "I love Leeds, it's a good club, and
I feel at home here. I've heard the speculation loads
of times before. Every club I've been at in the last three
or four years, after I've been there about six to eight
months, there are rumours I'm going here, there and everywhere.
"But just to clarify, and get everything out of the
way, I'm happy at Leeds. I've always said that, and I'm
willing to keep fighting for my place. It's been a long
time since I celebrated with a cartwheel after scoring
a goal in the Premiership, and it was nice to get half
an hour on the pitch," added Keane. "I know
I haven't started a game for a while, and I've not played
as many matches as I would like to, but I'm not the manager
so there's not a lot I can do about that. Of course there
is frustration in not starting, particularly as I know
I'm playing well for Ireland and playing well for Leeds
when I come. "Obviously, no-one wants to be on the
bench. As a footballer you want to be playing football.
That's your job, but the last couple of months I haven't
been playing. But I feel good and I feel sharp, and I
will just have to keep doing what I'm doing. Hopefully
my goal yesterday, and what I did when I came on, will
maybe get me a start."
ROBBIE
SCORES AGAINST GRASSHOPPERS
Goals from Harry Kewell and
Robbie Keane were enough to see Leeds into the fourth
round of the Uefa Cup at the expense of Swiss side Grasshoppers.
Grasshoppers equalised twice with goals at either end
of each half but it was not enough to prevent David O'Leary's
side from eliminating them from the competition. After
a scrappy opening, Kewell settled Leeds' early nerves
with a superb solo effort in the 19th minute. Oliver Dacourt's
lunging tackle poked the ball clear to Kewell deep inside
his own half. He raced up the pitch, taking the ball past
the Grasshoopers' defence and finishing with a superb
right-footed chip past the on-rushing goalkeeper. But
a mix-up between Rio Ferdinand and Danny Mills allowed
Ricardo Nunez to steal a goal back for the Swiss team
just before half-time. However, seconds later Keane finished
well to restore Leeds' cushion. The second half began
more sedately with neither goalkeeper being tested in
the early stages. Grasshoppers began to threaten more
as the half progressed but Nunez's second goal - a
well-taken low drive - came too late to give Leeds any
real cause for alarm.
ROBBIE
SCORES AGAINST TROYES
Robbie Keane saved Leeds from
European embarrassment with the late goal that took them
past Troyes. Last season's Champions League semi-finalists
were just 13 minutes away from the ignominy of a Second
Round exit in the UEFA Cup when the Republic of Ireland
striker pounced. His close-range header dragged David
O'Leary's side through 6-5 on aggregate, just when it
looked as if they would succumb to the away goals rule
at the hands of a side that had already accounted for
Newcastle in the InterToto Cup. Troyes, again full of
flair and force going forward had taken an early lead
through Sharib Amzine, but once Mark Viduka headed Leeds
level the nerve-ends seemed to have been saved. But a
fortunate strike from David Hamed and fine third from
Jerome Bothen left Leeds staring humiliation squarely
in the face at 5-5 on aggregate, until Keane's seventh
of the season saved the day. Even the goal had a slice
of luck about it as Viduka, put beyond the off-side trap
by David Batty, screwed his effort wide of the mark only
for the ever-alert Keane to pop up and steer a simple
header past the man on the line. It confirmed the Irishman's
position as his side's leading scorer and is easily the
most important goal he has scored since his move from
Inter Milan to side desperate to do well in Europe after
last season's exploits fell agonisingly short. Two defensive
lapses in the home leg left Leeds with a tough task in
the Champagne region of France and their place in Friday's
third-round draw looked even more precarious as Troyes
took an early lead as Amzine smashed a stunning strike
high into the top right-hand corner. But the first leg
had seen Viduka run the French defence ragged and true
to form, the Aussie grabbed his third goal against them
on 14 minutes as Batty looped a clever ball back into
the box and the Aussie climbed highest to calm the visitors'
nerves. Keane then saw an effort come off the foot of
the far post before another long-range effort gave Troyes
hope of overturning a 4-2 first-leg, Dominic Matteo sticking
out a limp leg to divert Hamed's low drive past a bemused
Martyn. The England keeper then did superbly to flip Samuel
Boutal's drive over before Rafih Saifi wentdown the left
and his low cross squeezed through the legs of Duberry,
Rothen arrived unchallenged to crash home and put his
side level on aggregate, but ahead on away goals. Until
Keane striking instinct put him on the spot to give Leeds
an overall lead that, once Martyn had smothered Nicolas
Gousse at death, ensured another rollercoaster European
ride rumbles on.
ROBBIE
SCORES FIRST SENIOR HAT TRICK
Robbie Keane's first senior
hat-trick helped condemn managerless Leicester to a third-round
Worthington Cup exit as Leeds hammered six at Filbert
Street. Eirik Bakke, Mark Viduka and Harry Kewell also
got their names on a lengthy scoresheet as sorry City,
with Garry Parker temporarily at the helm, capitulated
all too easily in front of their own fans. The tone was
set as early as the twelfth minute as Keane deflected
a Bakke header past Ian Walker from close range. And the
same two players combined four minutes later, as the Norwegian
headed Ian Harte's cross into the path of Irishman Keane,
who doubled his side's lead at the second time of asking.
The visitors lined up for shooting practice, and Olivier
Dacourt went close from long range before Keane turned
provider, sending Bakke clear with a back-heel to plunder
a third after 39 minutes. Soon after the break it was
clear that Parker hadn't managed to muster the words to
rouse his charges, and Keane's all-round excellence was
rewarded on 53 minutes, as he reacted smartly after Viduka's
shot was blocked to snaffle his hat-trick. With the Foxes
fans voicing their displeasure, their side fell even further
behind four minutes later as Aussie striker Viduka, without
a goal since August, bent a delightful fifth past Walker
via the underside of the bar. Viduka's fellow Socceroo
Kewell got in on the act seven minutes later.
ROBBIE
SCORES AGAINST IPSWICH
Leeds returned to the top of
the Premiership after a Mark Venus own goal four minutes
from time gifted David O'Leary's side victory. Leeds were
trailing to a 22nd minute header from Marcus Stewart until
Robbie Keane drew them level with just over 20 minutes
to go. And a trademark piece of wing wizardry from Harry
Kewell ensured Leeds left with all three points as Venus
stabbed the Australian ace's cross into his own net. It
was no surprise when last season's surprise package did
break the deadlock in the 22nd minute when Stewart stole
a march on Danny Mills to head Venus' inch-perfect cross
past Martyn. Ipswich continued to search for the crucial
second and Nigerian international George should have done
better when he attempted an ambitious chip from the edge
of the box in the 67th minute. Keane wasted a golden opportunity
two minutes later to punish George for his miss when he
found himself one-on-one with Sereni, but the former Sampdoria
stopper made another excellent save. But man-of-the-match
Sereni could do nothing to prevent Keane from drawing
Leeds level two minutes later after the Republic of Ireland
international latched onto Kewell's exquisite throughball
before coolly slotting home. From that point on there
was only going to be one winner, but it took the outstretched
boot of the unfortunate Venus to ensure Leeds leapfrogged
Manchester United and Arsenal at the top of the Premiership.
ROBBIE
SCORES AGAINST MARITIMO
Leeds restored some order to
their latest European campaign by finally overcoming the
threat of Maritimo. The Portuguese side had caused a stir
by winning the first leg in Madeira, but crumbled as David
O'Leary's UEFA Cup hopefuls enjoyed an Elland Road cakewalk.
Robbie Keane and Harry Kewell overturned the deficit before
the break and Eirik Bakke added another in the second-half
as Leeds at last showed they are taking this competition
seriously after the criticism of their first-leg flop.
Maritimo could even have plunged them into further trouble
on 12 minutes as Brazilian Dinda forced Nigel Martyn to
parry his thundering 35-yard free-kick and then get up
quickly to block Quim's rebound with his legs. But thankfully
for a surprisingly large Elland Road crowd it proved to
be just a blip as the home side quickly cancelled out
Bruno's freak free-kick a week ago. David Batty fed Robbie
Keane down the right channel and although two Maritimo
defenders came across, a fortunate richochet fell perfectly
for the Irishman to smash a fine effort high inside Nelson's
near post. Even then the outcome was by no means certain
and it needed Kewell's third goal in two games to settle
the nerves, the Australian planting a firm header past
Nelso after compatriot Viduka had picked him out with
a pin-point cross from the right. Their persistence was
rewarded with a third soon after though as Kewell streaked
clear on the left, rifled in a low effort that Nelson
could not hold and Bakke pounced to stab home the loose
ball to add to his vital goal against Derby.
ROBBIE
STRIKES LEEDS TO TOP
Leeds Goalscorer Robbie Keane
insisted the club must keep their feet on the ground as
their 2-0 at Charlton lifted them to the top of the Premiership
table. Keane said "It's nice to score but first and
foremost it's nice to get the win. Charlton is always
a tough place to win and luckily for us they got a man
sent off (Graham Stuart) and then it was easier for us.
It's early days yet but it's good to be playing well and
to win."
ROBBIE
SCORES AGAINST CHARLTON
Danny Mills had a happy return
to The Valley as Leeds United went top of the Premiership
with a 2-0 victory over Charlton, who played for an hour
with 10 men after Graham Stuart was sent off. Robbie Keane's
first of the season and a second half Mills rocket gave
Leeds the points, though they should have scored more
as they missed chance after chance as Charlton struggled
to keep pace. Charlton's early season woe continued as
they were forced to endure wave after wave of Leeds attacks
following the dismissal of their captain for a two-footed
lunge at Ian Harte. Scott Parker's header from a corner
was athletically saved by Nigel Martyn in the Leeds goal,
but O'Leary's men were a constant threat on the counter-attack,
with the pace and skills of Keane and Harry Kewell a menace
to Fish and Steve Brown. And it came as no surprise when
Keane netted his first of the season after 21 minutes,
pouncing on a loose ball after Fish had elected to let
the ball run back to goalkeeper Kiely. The young Irishman
- his place under pressure after his £12 million
move from Inter Milan over the summer - kept his cool
to lift the ball over the advancing Kiely and give his
side the lead. Keane was rarely out of the action and
was the subject of The Valley's frustrations just before
the half-hour mark when he appeared to be sent sprawling
by the Charlton 'keeper, only for referee Mark Halsey
to book him for diving - much to the annoyance of O'Leary
on the sidelines. But the pivotal moment came on the 36th
minute when the Charlton captain Stuart was sent off for
a two-footed tackle on Harte. The full-back was unhurt
in the clash, but it was an ugly lunge from Stuart and
exactly the type of challenge the FA are trying to extinguish.
Leeds remained patient and simply hit Charlton on the
break - a tactic rewarded when full-back Mills crashed
a 25-yard left-footed strike past Kiely, much to the annoyance
of the home fans who had booed his every touch.
ROBBIE
TO MAKE MOVE PERMANENT
Robbie Keane has hinted that
he will be making his loan move with Leeds a permanent
one. The former Coventry and Wolves prodigy, who joined
Inter Milan at the start of the season for £13million,
was brought back to England by David O'Leary on loan after
a nightmare Italian introduction. Since then 6 goals in
11 appearances has made Keane one of the hottest Premiership
properties. And Keane gave his strongest indication that
he will be staying at Leeds for next season's Champions
League campaign, making the £12million switch permanent.
After being awarded the Carling Player of the Month award
Keane beamed: "So far it's gone well for me and I'm
enjoying every minute and it's nice to get an award. We've
been doing well this month as a few weeks ago we were
14th in the league, but now we're sixth and hopefully
we can get ourselves into Europe. Leeds are a great side
and in a few years I think we'll be a force, but it would
be nice to meet Inter in the Champions League next year
and do well against them. I don't think I have anything
to prove to anyone and I'm just concentrating on going
out and playing to the best of my ability. I had an opportunity
to go and play for one of the best clubs in the world
and obviously I couldn't turn it down, but it's nice to
be back playing in the Premiership. Alan Smith and Mark
Viduka have been doing very well and I didn't expect to
get my chance so soon, but luckily things have gone well
for me. The only unfortunate thing is that I won't be
able to play in the Champions League as I've already played
once in the competition for Inter. Hopefully we'll be
back there next season."
O'LEARY
PAYS TRIBUTE TO KEANE
Leeds
boss David O'Leary paid tribute to Robbie Keane, who he
will make a permanent fixture in his squad at the end
of the season when he forks out a further £12million
to Inter Milan. O'Leary said: "Robbie's done really
well since he arrived, but I don't think we will see the
best of him until next season. We're working very hard
to get him more involved in the team play as a whole and
he freely admits he needs to improve in that area. But
his goals have been vital for us. Just how vital we will
find out at the end of the season."
ROBBIE
WINS PLAYER OF THE MONTH
Leeds
striker Robbie Keane has been crowned the Carling Player
of the Month for January. The on-loan Irishman will pick
up the award before the home game with Derby after making
a spectacular return to English football. Keane netted
five goals in January, including a brace against Manchester
City and an overhead kick against Coventry, as David OLearys
men climbed up the Premiership table. The Carling awards
panel said: "Robbie Keane has shown a temperament
beyond his years during the spell at Inter Milan and subsequent
return to English football. Since his loan move to Leeds
he has scored six goals and reaffirmed himself as one
of the best strikers in the Carling Premiership. It is
also no surprise to see that United's recent upturn in
form has gone hand-in-hand with Keane's signing. Keane
has scored six times in 11 games since joining from Inter
Milan and Leeds have first option on his permanent signing
at the end of the season, for a fee of around £12million".
The Republic of Ireland striker has bagged six goals in
eight starts in a six week spell and on Friday was presented
with his Carling award at United's Thorp Arch training
complex. The 20 year old said: "I know I've been
scoring a lot of goals, but all credit to the rest of
the lads for providing the chances. "My goal against
Coventry was definitely the best, but I just wish it hadn't
been against my former club" "But it's great
to have been given the award. It's been a good month for
me and a good month for the team which is the most important
thing."We started out in 14th place and now we're
up to sixth which shows how well we're doing. Winning
games has given us more confidence and we're working very
hard to get right up there in the league and to qualify
for Europe. My aim now is to help Leeds qualify for the
Champions League again next season to make up for it.".
ROBBIE
NOT PUT OFF PLAYING ABROAD AGAIN
Leeds
utd striker Robbie Keane has said that he has not been
put off playing abroad following his experiences
at Inter Milan and whilst he may well apply his trade
overseas in the future, he admits that it will not be
for a while and probably not at Inter. Leeds have the
option to sign the on-loan Irishman for £12m this
summer, a scenario that looks more likely by the week,
although Keane admitted, "I can't say that playing
abroad is over for me." He continued, "It looks
unlikely I'll be going back to Inter, but I'll never forget
or regret the experience I had there. It is great to be
back playing first-team football again and that's all
I've ever wanted to do. I'm told there were a few clubs
who were in for me when Inter said I could go. But as
soon as Leeds came in there was never any doubt where
I wanted to go because it is a club that's really going
places and has so many players I already knew well."
Keane added, "But at my age how can I say I've completely
closed the book on playing abroad again? If it is a way
to improve yourself and learn you've always got to consider
it. Now, though, I couldn't be happier with my game. I'm
more relaxed and mentally stronger. Much of that is down
to David O'Leary, a great manager who knows exactly what
he wants from his players and is fantastic at letting
them know it. Hopefully I'll be a Leeds player for at
least a few years yet. It is a very exciting prospect."
He admits that his main frustration this season is not
being able to take part in Leeds Champions League campaign
having already played in Europe with Inter, as he said,
"I go with them to the matches and join the preparations,
but in the end all I can do is support them and wish them
well. Hopefully, though, I'll be part of the European
effort next season. I certainly think we've a good chance
of finishing in third place and taking the third Champions
League spot again."
BOTH
MANAGERS PRAISE KEANE
Both managers were left singing
the praises of United striker Robbie Keane after the youngster
proved the difference between Leeds and Coventry. Leeds
manager David O'Leary said: "He scored a fine goal
but perhaps he should have scored in the first half. We
kept it tight at the back which was a good thing. I felt
we controlled the game even though I know we can play
better. The crowd have stayed with us even though we have
lost a few games. To get a crowd of 36,000 against Coventry
is fantastic." Coventry manager Gordon Strachan also
applauded Robbie Keane's wonder winner for Leeds. The
Republic of Ireland striker powered in the 69th minute
with a spectacular overhead kick to settle the match.
"It was a special goal from a special player. You
can't coach something like that," said Strachan.
ROBBIE
SCORES AGAINST COVENTRY
Robbie Keane returned to haunt
old club Coventry City, with his spectacular strike giving
Leeds victory at Elland Road. The Republic of Ireland
international's overhead kick in the 69th minute illuminated
an otherwise gloomy encounter, leaving Coventry three
points adrift of safety at the bottom of the Premiership.
Leeds came close to making the breakthrough after 61 minutes
when Keane won a free-kick 20 yards out and Harte powered
a free-kick through the wall but Hedman reacted superbly
to push the ball over the top. However, the Swede was
helpless nine minutes later when Keane struck the winner
in style. David Thompson cleared Viduka's shot off the
line but the ball was returned into the box by Danny Mills.
Keane got on the end of it to send a brilliant overhead
kick beyond Hedman.
ROBBIE
MAKES DEBUT FOR LEEDS
LEEDS striker Robbie Keane was
quick to praise all the United players after playing a
key role in the 2-1 win at Aston Villa. The 20 year Irish
international set up Lee Bowyer's first-half equaliser
and was later hauled down inside the are to earn Leeds
the decisive penalty converted by fellow countryman Ian
Harte. While Robbie may have grabbed the headlines, he
insisted afterwards that United's appetite to battle for
everything was the major factor in securing all three
points. Keane said: "We all knew beforehand that
Aston Villa were a bogey side, so we knew it was vital
we worked very very hard. "On the penalty decision
awarded against Gareth Barry he added: "I thought
it was a penalty. If he hadn't touched me I would have
had a great chance of scoring, so lucky for us it was
awarded.
WHY ROBBIE
WENT TO LEEDS
Robbie Keane has revealed why
he turned down a number of clubs to move to Leeds, but
has mixed feelings about leaving Italy. The Republic of
Ireland striker, who jetted in to Leeds on Thursday afternoon
to undergo a medical at Elland Road, is optimistic about
his spell in Leeds, but admitted he did believe things
would turn out better in Milan. "I have mixed emotions
- when I joined Inter Milan in July I thought I would
be spending some years in Italy, "said Keane. "I
have settled well over there and was learning the language
and had made a number of friends. But the most important
thing was that I had only been picked for half of the
Serie A games and, as any footballer will tell you, playing
is everything. "The 20-year-old was consulted by
Inter once other clubs became interested, and Robbie was
relieved that Leeds did come in for him as they were his
first choice. "Last week Inter officials told me
that there had been a lot of interest from Premiership
clubs and indicated to me that they would be considering
offers. They asked me which team I would join if I had
a choice and I told them it would be Leeds. I want to
have the best possible football career and I know that
moving to Leeds will help me achieve this. There are so
many young players at Leeds and I know the Irish lads
here. We are definitely going places. I think we can win
the European Cup. There are some tremendous players here
and it is a pleasure to be part of things here. I am hoping
we can bring some trophies and silverware to Leeds."
LEEDS
LAND ROBBIE
Leeds have sensationally landed
Robbie Keane on loan for the rest of the season with an
option to make the move permanent for a transfer fee of
£12m at the start of the 2001/2002 season. Keane
will arrive in England tomorrow for a medical and it is
hoped he will be signed and registered as a Leeds player
in time to be available for the Aston Villa game on Saturday
and the trip to Newcastle on Boxing Day. The news that
Leeds have taken Inter Milan striker Robbie Keane on loan,
with a view to a permanent move, will send shivers down
the spines of the Whites' Premiership rivals. Keane made
an explosive debut in the top-flight last season for Coventry,
and, as Opta's stats reveal, he should cause plenty of
headaches yet again for the players given the responsibility
of keeping him in check. The Republic of Ireland international
scored 12 times for the Sky Blues and recorded an impressive
goals-to-shots ratio of 21% for the 1999-2000 campaign
- despite struggling to find the net in the latter stages
of the season. One thing that marked Keane out above most
strikers last season was his unerring accuracy in front
of goal. The youngster hit the target with a commendable
61% of all efforts, regularly testing opposing 'keepers.
As United unveiled Robbie Keane, Chairman Peter Ridsdale
was able to reveal that the striker had agreed a deal
beyond this season for another five years. Keane is likely
to begin his spell at Elland Road with a place on the
bench tomorrow after receiving international clearance
at the last minute, and increased the likelihood of United
paying Inter Milan the £12m needed to secure his
services at the end of the season by agreeing personal
terms. "I am delighted that we are able to announce
that Robbie has signed for the balance of the season and
a commitment for five years beyond," said Ridsdale.
" We can't wait to see him pull on the number seven
shirt as soon as possible and watch him play. "
